Discover Kirchenwirt 'das Steak-Wirtshaus'

Tucked into the charming village square at Kirchenpl. 2, 9584 Finkenstein am Faaker See, Austria, Kirchenwirt 'das Steak-Wirtshaus' feels like the kind of place you hope to stumble upon while traveling through Carinthia. I first visited on a late summer evening after a long hike around Lake Faak, and from the moment I stepped inside, the scent of grilled beef and wood smoke made it clear that this wasn’t just another local inn-it was a serious steakhouse with roots in Austrian hospitality.

The dining room blends rustic alpine style with modern comfort. Solid wood tables, warm lighting, and attentive staff create an atmosphere that feels relaxed yet focused on quality. What immediately caught my attention, though, was the menu. It’s not overly long, which I always see as a good sign. Instead of trying to please everyone, the kitchen concentrates on premium cuts of beef, regional specialties, and carefully chosen sides.

Their steaks are the undeniable highlight. The restaurant sources high-quality beef, and according to Austria’s agricultural reports, the country maintains strict quality controls for meat production, particularly in terms of traceability and animal welfare. That commitment shows on the plate. I ordered a ribeye cooked medium-rare, and it arrived with a deep, caramelized crust and a perfectly pink center. The staff explained that they use high-temperature grilling techniques to lock in juices, a method endorsed by culinary institutes for achieving the Maillard reaction-the chemical process responsible for that rich, savory flavor crust steak lovers crave.

If you’re unsure which cut to choose, the team walks you through it. They’ll explain differences between filet, sirloin, and tomahawk steaks in simple terms-fat distribution, tenderness, and flavor intensity. That kind of expertise isn’t just scripted; it reflects real training and experience. In fact, during one visit, I watched a server describe dry-aging in detail, explaining how controlled humidity and time break down muscle fibers, intensifying flavor and improving texture. The process can take several weeks, and reputable culinary sources like the American Meat Science Association confirm its impact on tenderness and taste.

Beyond beef, the menu includes Austrian classics-crispy schnitzel, seasonal vegetables, and hearty soups. Everything feels thoughtfully prepared. A friend of mine, who prefers lighter fare, ordered grilled vegetables with herb butter and a fresh salad, and even that simple dish was balanced and flavorful. The wine list focuses on Austrian vineyards, especially from Carinthia and neighboring regions, offering crisp whites that pair beautifully with steak.

Online reviews consistently praise the service and food quality, and I can see why. During peak tourist season around Lake Faak, restaurants can become rushed, but here the pacing remains steady. Courses are spaced well, and staff check in without hovering. That attention to detail builds trust. You feel confident that what’s on your plate is prepared with care and intention.

From a broader dining perspective, steak restaurants succeed when they combine sourcing transparency, proper cooking techniques, and hospitality. According to global food service studies, diners increasingly prioritize authenticity and ingredient quality over flashy presentation. Kirchenwirt clearly understands that shift. There’s no unnecessary gimmickry-just well-prepared meat, solid side dishes, and genuine Austrian warmth.

One practical note: reservations are wise on weekends, especially in summer. While the location is central in Finkenstein, parking can be limited during busy hours. Still, once seated, the experience makes the extra planning worthwhile.

After several visits, what stands out most is consistency. The steaks arrive cooked as requested, the menu remains focused yet satisfying, and the staff maintain a knowledgeable, friendly approach. In a region known for lakes and mountain scenery, this steak-wirtshaus holds its own as a culinary destination, offering a reliable, high-quality dining experience rooted in tradition and executed with skill.

  • Very friendly waiters, the menu is written in "carinthian" accent with an translation page to traditional German, the food is awesome. We both had steaks which tasted wonderfully. The food and the service is worth the price a hundred times. Overall just a great restaurant with a very carinthian feeling to it.
